Hofsa rods in September

Author Haraldur Eiríksson

Hofsa rods in September

We still have few September rods in the Hofsa river.

The Hofsa has always been very popular with British and American rods. Some say it is the perfect salmon river. Just cast your line across the pool and the water will present the fly for you. It drains a vast 1100 km2, and is 85 km in length, with 35 km of fishing below the great falls. The top beat is its most famous being the only beat in a canyon and requiring a drive along hanging tracks and walking to get to the uppermost pools. The salmon can only go as far as the falls at the top of beat one.

The rest of the river is simply pool after pool of perfect fly water with snow-capped mountains in the background. Pools are long and wide with gravel bottoms and have many good lies. Half way down the valley the river is joined by the Sunnudalsa which is fished separately as is the very lower part of the main river for Arctic char. The Hofsa is a famous, much revered Icelandic river.

Available dates: September 1st-7th.

Hafralonsa under Hreggnasi management from 2018

We are proud to announce the famous Hafralonsa will be under Hreggnasi´s management from the summer of 2018. Most of our customer´s are familiar with the progress we have made with the next neighbor, Svalbardsa, and we look at our work there as a role model for the years to come on this mighty river.

Hafralonsa is the large sister of the Svalbardsa. It is one of the most powerful rivers on the north/east corner, about 630 km distance from Reykjavik. The river is about 24 km long with 55 marked pool, and is fished with 4 rods. Famous for large salmon and beautiful and remote nature, this is truly a gem amongst Icelandic salmon rivers.

The lodge is quite simple, and has 6 double bedrooms. The river is strictly catch and release. As a bonus, the Hafralonsa has a strong run of Arctic Char and sea-trout. More information: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

BEST POOLS ON DOLUM 2016

Author

Confirmed total catch from Laxa in Dolum is 1.717 salmon. Best pool on the river in 2016 was Home pool (15) with 261 salmon landed. Silent pool (7) produced 227 salmon. Hofðafljot (24) produced 167 salmon, Höskuldsstaðastrengur (11) 96 salmon and Donustadagrjot (26) 85 salmon. Many pools had 60-80 salmon landed, and fish was well spread through the system. The only dry spell we had was late august, beginning of September. This affected the catch numbers for two weeks, but numbers of salmon in the river still made sure that all partys had fantastic fishing. Average weight was higher than for many years, and we belive this will be the case in the future.

This is fantastic fishing for only 4-6 rods (496 rod days). On top of that we had very high average weight, with hundreds of MSW salmon being landed. Dolum is finally back to the stage where we want it, having an outstanding season for the second year running (1.570 salmon in 2015).

FINAL SCORE FOR GRIMSA AND LAXA IN KJOS

Author

The south/west coast rivers did not have a good season this year. Laxa in Kjos and Grimsa just passed 600 salmon for the 90 days season. Poor runs of grilse are the reason for this outcome, but it seems like the smolts did not go out to sea in the cold spring of 2015. As a result, double amount of smolts left our rivers this spring, expecting to show up as grilse in the 2017 season. We had very high average weight in 2016. Good runs of MWS fish in June and beginning of July kept anglers busy throughout the season, with largest ones being over one meter. Kjos had very good runs of sea-trout, and hundreds of fish up to 17 pounds landed. Over all. Not a good season. Laxa in Kjos had a drop from 1.400 salmon to 601 and Grimsa 1400 salmon to 606. We are expecting a very good one next year as it seems we are seeing two age groups of smolts overlapping .

AMAZING FISHING ON LAXA IN DOLUM

Author

Last week produced 103 salmon for only 4 rods on Laxa in Dolum. This was mostly large salmon, with only few grilse amongst them. The river is up to 131 salmon already after only 9 days of fishing for 3-4 rods. Grilse runs appeared on Wednesday, so we are hoping that this good fishing continues for the coming groups.
