Tungufljót Skaftafell region

Often called the "Rio Grande of the North"
The Tungufljót River, located in the Skaftafell region, is renowned as one of Iceland's top destinations for sea-run brown trout fishing. What sets it apart is the exceptional average size of the trout — many fish reach the 20-pound mark each year. Most commonly, these powerful trout weigh between 5 and 10 pounds and are considered some of the hardest-fighting fish in the angling world. The river is home to a completely natural, self-sustaining fish stock.
Set amidst a breathtaking landscape of glaciers and volcanoes, Tungufljót is just a short distance from some of Iceland's most iconic natural wonders, including Skaftafell National Park and Vatnajökull — Europe’s largest glacier.
Prime season
The best times to fish for sea-run brown trout are in April and May, when the trout migrate downstream to feed, and again from mid-August to October, when they return upstream from the ocean to spawn in the fall.

Tungufljót Lodge
A self-catering lodge overlooking the river, consisting of two connected cabins joined by a large veranda. Each cabin includes two twin/double bedrooms. The lodge is fully equipped with a kitchen, BBQ facilities, and ample space for storing waders.
